Ven. members of the monastic Sangha,
Valued Upasaka and Upasika,
Dear Bodhisattvas and reader,

My person's relatively young "mentor", an Ven. Thera, here in this small Village Monastery (in this case even a seldom Dhammayuttika Nikaya) is actually endowed with all qualities which would made him the life of a forest monk possible and he also sees the life of a wandering Monk as the only way to actually live the Holly Life to its highest fruit in our days since the Sangha has lost the same qualities as the lay people, the basics. There is really great desire for him to do so and let things just go their ways. Yet he still feel obligated in regard of his parents and also in regard of all his old semester students, mostly villager, rice farmer, people who have done a lot of scarifies, who would not have easy anybody who teaches them the Dhamma, since it is not so easy to come in contact with the good teachings even there a sometimes 3 monasteries in one village. The only reason why he would travel to certain invitations are mostly sick or dying devoted disciples who have such last wishes as to offer him food or to teach vipassana and samadhi. When ever he is allowed he would teach and lead them to stay on mindfulness on the frame of references, on the breath, even till their last breath. Sometimes its not possible or there is more trust in modern medicine to simply keep a body alive.

That is his way of gratitude, a seldom talent and a precious gift he would never limit to share. Young people, either laypeople or monastics do not have much gratitude and seldom serve others before their own benefit. Of course such is possible, having gained the merits in the past, but will such last till one is old? The illusion of regulated social systems becomes more and more clear (they are not really based on gratitude and goodness) - even for those who cling much on such ideas of life without obligations - and if young people, incl. their parents will not start to be aware, that all they own, their knowledge, places, even their bodies have been scarified by their parents, grandparents and many other supporters and with it start to repay their obligation, they are sure to have a real poor existence when they are old, maybe they will be served by machines and payed people. Such looks like that it will be the general situation for most in their old age if they even come to time to rest in their life.

One can meet such sad situation everywhere and lack of having people who care for one, lack of support, lack of people who lock after one, is not a matter of having not amassed enough insurances, wealth or what ever people today do for their future, but because they made it simply for themselves and not in the way to pay back ones gratitude at first place.  Even if we would carry our parents on our shoulders and give them the worlds treasures as a gift, we could not pay back what they have done for us. The only way to pay our parents really back, is if we can encourage them to virtue, to generosity, to discernment and establish them in the Dhamma. Then we are able to give them something back which gives both parts release.

So if you are in the position of a child, take away any burden of your parents or your grandparents, so that they would have time and power to practice the Dhamma. Make them acquainted with the Three Jewels, move them to take part on what ever possible meritorious deed and event, not to speak about taking care of their food, medicine, clothes and shelter. You do not do your task simply by paying tax or hire people. Take also you children and teach them why you do things others are not doing and encourage them to serve and respect the elders which will be simply for their (childrens) own future benefit and for nobody else.

So all of your duties are either practicing the Dhamma or pay back your obligation and you can even make them sometimes hand in hand. When ever you are missing one of this two you know that you are nourish on past merits and its not sure that the store is even enough for a comfortable life in this lifetime. Not to speak about lives to come. What ever is given, is not lost. Material wealth, insurances,... are not for sure and can be of no value even tomorrow. All you can do then is beating your breast, put that will not change the situation. What ever is done for the purpose to amass will not be for ones long time benefit.

Last but not least, my person also likes to remember you that all this possibilities on zugangzureinsicht.org or sangham.net are not meant as a storage, to amass readers, popularity, or something that should be erected, but ongoing invitations to take part and actually practice the Dhamma. If there is no interest in actually doing and train the basics and the meritorious deeds, there are plenty of other places where the simple consumption is encouraged and supplied, ready just to take away. Its just to remember or make it clear, that if simply the best and comfortable access is desired, there are places in the world but not easy an equal an access to insight. Places in the normal world are the places where parents do not teach their children obligation, gratitude and care, and the joy with it is only for a short time, yet for every child alluringly. Not even speak of the benefit of doing things in advanced. A father and a mother, when doing, do not tell a child to be in this way out of own interest, but because they know the results for their children if they do not start with the basics and are intoxicated in youth, health and live. Is especially when your faculties are no more so strong, that Dhamma is needed. Who will ever care for the food of Dhamma when times have become different? Your memory stick, your google storage, your favorite websites, people who give and share you Dhamma and let you participate, they are all not for sure. So its good to remember that is has a cause that one falls to a gift and value it and give future effects also causes in the present as much as possible.

Not many are gifted to be able to pay their parents, teacher, Buddha, Dhamma, Sangha back in one of the two or even both ways, or have developed a way to be able. So one is wise to make either use of the gift of a receiver or to develop such possibilities. Usually when parents are growing old and are up to die, the most of the family members would be most but to secure the heritage to amass as much of the heir. Don't think its different with the Buddha, his Sangha and the Dhamma. And what do you think, even if having snatched the most of the heir, will it be for a long time benefit, will it last long? So a wise child would let the greedy relatives do what ever they take for their business and objectives -  they are not able to do it different and they believe in the world - but would stay right there, knowing where his/her child's shoes for his/here path and aspiration to getting free of this circle of obligation had come from.

Take any of the worldly burdens of those who are going on the head of the line of heir and there will be never a need to fear that if ones own time is ripe, support will be missing when leaving the lane of trade, changing to Dhamma.

Many of your parents have been grown up with less and had really hardships. Do you think, if they would not have been busy to simple take care for your desires and spend all their energy to give you first all of what you desire and what makes you happy, while having not a little support, if they would have had more time, wouldn't they not have taught your this simply teachings at first place? They woud have, maybe had even so. And the same is with your parents in Dhamma. All they do is fight for a living to be able to feed you. Yet there is not easy the change that you would see the basics nor that they would have time to teach you them.

There is a reason why such teaching are already rare in this world. So it would be good to give it a reason to grow and stay alive, Dhamma in line of Dhamma.

Atma therefore, to show the line of what ever families, would like to share a Dhammatalk given by Ajahn Chah, given for a dying devoted Upasika and here hole family.

This is a talk that Ajahn Chah recorded at the request of one of his students whose mother was on her deathbed. The student had expected just a short message for his mother, but instead Ajahn Chah gave this extended talk of consolation and encouragement for the mother and the whole family.
