Folk Buddhism - Volksbuddhismus  (janakathā) [Forum Guide]

[English click here ]

Werte Dhammafreunde,
Werte sangham.net Besucher,

Namo tassa bhagavato arahato sammā-sambuddhassa

Quote from: SN 12.61

Folk Buddhism [Forum Guide]

Valued Dhamma friends,
valued visitors of sangham.net,

this subforum is thought for exchanging about the various Buddhist customs which over the centuries have developed, out of intermingling of the Dhamma-Vinaya tradition with other faiths and regional customs.

If you are logged in as a Sanghamitta, then the numerous subforums are not visible, in order to not confront you too much with distracting topics. Please choose the membership "Anussavika" in order for all the forums here to be visible to you. This area is also fully visible for guests.

This large section of the forum can be seen as an overview of what is called "Buddhism" in popular terms, with all its cultural colorations and adaptions. Also culture, tradition and folklore, the customs of a society are a basis for a successful practice of the Dhamma. Here it is welcome to get acquainted with the various cultural aspects, to discuss them and to share them, which provide some insight into the development of the society in interaction with the Buddha's disciples and the original community.

In many places the Buddha's tradition has mixed with other folk faiths and created various imitations which all contain at least traces of the original and are inspired by the great influence of a unique teacher.

You are heartily invited to perhaps also present your own cultural roots in connection with Dhamma tradition.

An important aspect of this forum is also to always learn to differentiate a bit better between the folk adaptations and the original and, in the other direction, perhaps occasion for adopting new adaptations which are discovered in other cultural spheres.

As it is well presented in the Sigalovada Sutta, the Buddha did not think much of establishing new folk traditions (religion in the widest sense). On the other hand he provided people with a content to their leading customs.
Perhaps interesting in this respect is a short introdcution to and translation of the "Sigalovada Sutta: The discourse to the young Sigala" under the title: Understanding the traditionsless tradition .

Culture and tradition are important for people just as much as it is important for a child to learn to stick to simple rules and rituals. This provides the basis for a further practice but also a well regulated conduct in a worldly society. Also interesting in connection with this topic is the article: A door to the Dhamma

Generally on the topic "Importance of culture and tradtition" and perhaps significant for all may be this "appeal" for the maintenance and restoration of the own culture (remark: this is in its general sense applicable for all in equal measure, even if it is directed at a specified group here)

Preserving Our Heritage (translated back from the German translation to English)

North America is a melting pot. We Cambodians have been here for just one generation. In recent years, we have also resettled in Europe, Australia, and throughout Asia. As we rebuild our lives in new lands, as we become part of new societies, it is important for us also to preserve our cultural identity. Without our culture, we will become lost and confused, like fish outside of the water.

Cambodians have a precious heritage. The richness of Cambodian culture includes many gifts:

* Cambodians are fearless because they can overcome greed, anger and delusion.

* Cambodians are humble, courteous, and noble.

* Cambodians are grateful to their mother and father, to their leaders, to their land, and to the whole world. Cambodians keep the five moral precepts, the constitution of humanity, and the Dharma of goodness.

* Cambodians have mindfulness and clear comprehension as their protectors.

* Cambodians practice loving kindness, compassion, sympathetic joy, and equanimity.

* Cambodians have patience. They can bear great difficulties, suffering, and hardships.

* Cambodians forgive and forget the wrongs of other people. They learn from the lessons of the past. They use the present to build the future.

* Cambodians are truthful and well-behaved. They follow the middle path.

* Cambodians are soft and smiling. Their speech is truthful, loving, and practical, clear, vibrant, and sweet. Their speech has the power to free the mind from anxiety, to purify the mind from delusion, and to make the mind strong.

* Cambodians have the tradition of solidarity, united by Buddhism and their love of Dharma.

When we are in the river, we flow with the river, zigzag. But we cannot forget our boat, which is our tradition. Just as all Buddhas, may the Cambodian people be peacemakers. In the tradition of our sacred land, may we celebrate unity, loving kindness, and peace with our deepest gratitude.

Even though this appeal is very good-natured and pathbreaking in its essence, one nevertheless immediately sees the danger in it. National pride and racial modes of thinking as well as many other dangers slumber in this understanding if it is not understood and self-belief is very strongly present.
All too gladly one takes the boat for the goal and instead of using it well to the end according to its nature, in order to reach the further shore, our boats are put into the dry haven, and, out of fear that one day they should not be anymore, then guarded, defended and constantly refurbished.
Just as it is with a boat that stood on dry ground for too long, it, when set to water again, will leak and sink, since the sealing mass between the planks has dried out.

The body is just as perishable as the boat or single traditions. It does not make sense to fight against nature, but it makes sense to maintain and foster this body according to its necessity, without falling into vanity or narcissism in the process.

If we understand the interplay between boat and content then the time has come at which we can rise above tradition.

The Buddha warned the monks, not to teach higher teachings about the mind and impermanence of the body to common people, and advised to leave them the body as the object of observation for the "self":

Namo tassa bhagavato arahato sammā-sambuddhassa

"It would be better for the uninstructed run-of-the-mill person to hold to the body composed of the four great elements, rather than the mind, as the self. Why is that? Because this body composed of the four great elements is seen standing for a year, two years, three, four, five, ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, a hundred years or more. But what's called 'mind,' 'intellect,' or 'consciousness' by day and by night arises as one thing and ceases as another. Just as a monkey, swinging through a forest wilderness, grabs a branch. Letting go of it, it grabs another branch. Letting go of that, it grabs another one. Letting go of that, it grabs another one. In the same way, what's called 'mind,' 'intellect,' or 'consciousness' by day and by night arises as one thing and ceases as another.
Quote from: SN 12.61

The mind and the mental formations (content) are not graspable for most uninstructed people, but the body itself may allow it to observe impermanence and with that penetrate deeper into the truth of impermanence.

For the sincere practitioner it is of course a challenge to distinguish between content and body, between message and tradition, and to fall into neither the one nor the other extreme in order to finally penetrate these phenomena with wisdom.

The Way to the Monastery

Virtue, concentration, and discernment: These three things the Buddha called a path. The path isn't the religion, and it's not what the Buddha really wanted, but they're the way we get there.

It's the same as your coming from Bangkok to Wat Nong Pah Pong. You didn't want the road coming here. You wanted to reach the monastery instead. But the road was needed for you to get here. The road coming here isn't the monastery. It's just the road to the monastery. You have to follow the road to get to the monastery.

Virtue, concentration, and discernment are the road to peace, which is what we really want.

Here one finds the suitable place for topics like tea ceremonies, natural healing, rites and rituals as well as all mystical aspects in the various cultures which have flown into the "buddhist" tradition.

To be remarked in addition perhaps is that political debates are even here not very well placed. Should one however find it necessary anyway to talk about "conflict prone topics" then this forum should be recommended here: Tattle and daily opinion battle - Tratschen & Tagemeinungen (tiracchana yoni)

May this subforum contribute to developing more mutual understanding and compassion and preserving traditions in the way that it is necessary for them, without it being at the disadvantage of others.

Much joy in sharing, exploring, getting acquainted and discovering!

You are furthermore heartily invited to introduce your known and accustomed tradtitions and customs here and with it enable an access for others to your cultural sphere. With the recognition and understanding, barriers, unreasonable fears of contact as well as superstituous imaginations and bullheaded adopted views may fall by the wayside.

When we speak of "modern" Buddhism and Buddhism in Germany, the West, USA... today, or when the media report about these, then we have already taken a dive into this topical area here.
