about Geshe Gyalten:
Birth
Geshe Gyalten was born in Lhasa, Tibet in 1966. While still in his mother's womb he received his Dharma name, Tseten Gelek, from his teacher, the great yogi and scholar H. E. Choden Rinpoche. His grandmother, mother and father had great irreversible faith and devotion for H. E. Choden Rinpoche. They served Rinpoche while he was in Tibet in Solitary retreat for 19 years. Like thousands of Rinpoche's students in Tibet; they sought his blessings and guidance; not only for spiritual development but also for all major family matters as well.
Childhood
Since childhood, Geshe-la had a strong wish to become a monk. However, his parents sent him to Chinese school for nine years to learn general subjects including the Chinese language. Rinpoche advised Geshe-la to leave Tibet for India to meet H. H. the Dalai Lama, to receive his blessing and act according to His Holiness' advice. Geshe-la left for India in 1985; the same year that Rinpoche left for India. Geshe-la had the unbelievable good fortune to have an audience with HH the Dalai Lama. The Dalai Lama instructed him to study at the TCV School in Dharamsala, India, which he attended from 1985 to 1990. Geshe-la studied modern subjects including English and Hindi so forth and became the top student in his class. He also excelled in athletic pursuits, receiving many gold and silver metals for track and field events. Geshe-la was well known as the best orator and debater among all the Tibetan schools in India at this time.
Monk
In 1990, much to the surprise of many of his school teachers, class mates and friends, he became a monk. H E Choden Rinpoche gave him the ordination name of Gyalten Kunga and took him as a close personal student. Since then, Geshe-la has followed Rinpoche every where like a shadow follows the body. Under Rinpoche's guidance and instruction, Geshe-la learned the five great classical treaties of Buddhist Philosophy: the Perfection of Wisdom, Middle Way, Logic and Reason, Treasury of Knowledge and Vinaya (monastic discipline) as well as Lam Rim, Mind Training and Tantra at Sera Monastery for 15 years. Geshe-la received the Geshe Degree (equivalent to a PhD in Buddhism) in 2005 and learned Tibetan Medicine. For 11 years, he has traveled with H E Choden Rinpoche around the world to assist Rinpoche and to share his extensive knowledge of Buddhist philosophy, meditation, Tibetan medicine and yoga. He speaks Tibetan, Hindi, Chinese and English fluently. Geshe Gyalten has established several Dharma centers around the world including in the USA. The warmth of his smile has touched the hearts of thousands.
