Quote from: Ein Dhammafreund

"Step by Step" aber stetig weiter.

Today (13 Jan 2013) I received a letter form a Dhamma friend and this message truncated a very important issue which I would like to bring to discussion:

Quote from: ”A Dhamma friend”
Yesterday, on Uposatha, I gave your project some thoughts and some questions arose in me. For me a community distinguished itself with carrying out collaborative actions. In case of the order of the Buddha are these sanghakamma, like for example this Uposatha with it’s recitation of the Patimokkha. As you put in your project a strong orientation on Vinaya, the question seems to be reasonable: Which Vinaya, which Patimokkha are you talking about? If monks have different Patimokkha – like for example the two Hinayana-schools Theravada and Dharmagupta – they are not able to execute the Patimokkha-recitation as a collaborative sanghamkamma. Even inside the Theravada tradition are different Nikayas which make it particularly impossible, amongst other things because they celebrate the Upasatha on a different day.

As you see, I give your projects some of my thoughts even I am not registered yet. Maybe you like to lift up some of these thoughts and even put it into the public area of your forum to discuss them.
Beforehand many thanks for the share of this thought!

This is for sure a very touching issue and yes, I would say even a traumatically issue.

To this maybe some general thoughts to to loosen the constraints:

•   Sangham Dhamma-Vinaya Forum is a monastery (Vihara) at erection, a building side and not already a Vihara

•   The „project“ here is a laity projet for a monastery. If it will be become a place for a monastic Sangha of the? Sangha later on, I do not know, but that will be mainly an issue of the orientation from those who participate. For now (as far my intentions are) it is not meant for any particularly school, group or an particularly monk yet. From my opinion the works while erecting this “empty” building and the side prerequisites are best done if the orientation looks in direction of the noble Sangha (four pairs/eight persons) without personifying them in any way.

•   The „project“ (Vihara in erection) can hardly be regarded as a official Sanghakamma (in a way it is broasly understood or taught). In this regard it’s maybe necessary to discriminate between Sangha a little. The monastic Sangha, as those how officially commite Sanghakamma and the Sangha in it’s deeper and actually meaning. If the second mentioned Sangha is able to produce Sanghakamma is something we maybe need to consider a little. In any way there are no claims at all and there is no official will of any monastic Sangha inside this project yet. Once it will be received and boarder stones are set, it come to be a Vihara, but till then it is a laity community (Sangha or not is a matter of attainments on the path and starts with the first person) which might be visited by some monks who might help with advices.

•   (A side note which could be importand). It is not my project.. It is the project of those who participate on a community intention and beside of the responsibility in regard of the doner, to use it in the best way for the Sangha, there is nothing I take up and carry on as long as possible. Of course I am a little initiative here, but (next to the possibilities) only because I have seen that on many places is simply to less space for such things as many groups are so hardly bound and knotted within in themselves, which might give a certain feeling of security, but make them totally incapable of action and mainly busy with themselves. Also exclusively given things make it possible to do something here, but even this has its border where it burdens the conscience (free given has many layers and dangers of wraps; unrequested, unwished it is always difficult). I had left the capture projects actually already behind, as in this case I already had rummage enough in this existence and I guess I know all it’s aspects well. In case of Sanghakamma as general community intention, it’s a very important issue for me but I will rest on remaining own initiative (without being requested) only as long as there are recourses left and I as long as I find some reasonable justifications for it. So to say: if there will not develop any commune interest, it will end up with the end of the existing recourses. Any thing beside it would be maybe the work of a/the “Karmapa”.
“Jokes” by side, also in the Vinaya (I mostly refer to those variants form Srilanka or Thailand) there are hints, that there are people who can have/have influence on the Sangha and maybe such people will take part sooner or later.

•   For the inhibition threshold in regard of schools , I thought of installing a particular kuti in the Vihara-section. So each group of monastic members is able to retire separately and have their place for exchange. There are plenty of “monasteries” which are actually no “Viharas” but frequently visited by different monks and nuns as well as used as dwelling places for them. Every school is welcome. Maybe one day one of the group will move into the Vihara and or receive it or maybe it will be even possible to received/handed it over communally.

•    One fundamental idea of the undertaking, and I guess its according the founder of the Sangha, is to find conciliation and to make the Sangha to one Sangha as good as possible. For this one needs to find a neutral soil and maybe this here is a possible ground for it. On a building side is not much lost but always the possibility to develop something. Conciliation for the sake of conciliation is also something that was not intended by the founder, as conciliation is only conciliation if the parties can agree on something and not just play a part and act different in the backroom. Therefor good and patient discussions and power of endurance is needed. I guess everybody how has already dig a little into monastic life will agree suddenly that there are very less groups which are taking Vinaya really seriously and have confidence in it (and it’s really lesser an issue of which, but that is mostly an excuse). Also to increase the confidence in it should be an issue of this forum and for this it is needed to have the possibilities. Just criticize and do not supply the fundamental nessesaries isn’t a proper way. Like: “Look the monk is buying food for him self. What a bad monk.” and not a little an idea to provide him with food at the first place. That is a big issue in case of the internet but is also, if understood, easy transportable into the outside world.

•   To carry out the common Upasatha (additional I like to tell that I am not a little a scholar) I need to note, that if one takes the Vinaya expressions simply literaly and missed to look at the intentions and possible assuming developing defilements, there would be maybe not a single monk or non righteously ordained or able to ordain. Scrips are good if they develop some amounts of understanding, but to act understanding is needed and scripts will not be able to help in any way but mostly simply provide approaches for justifications (excuses) and not giving right (truth). The truth is always written inside the heart, the rest (opinions) on a surface of defilements. But I guess in this regard there will be plenty of fruitful and fearful discussions. As for the fear might leave lies in the hand of those who participate.

•   Maybe it has been seen that I pulled some things like compensations, rebukes as well as higher ethic into the area of the laity (as this issues are very less discussed in the most communities) and I think, that even as a laity or as laity group it is possible to give a good sample. How ever, it will help to understand monastic people better and to help them in a better was without bringing them into any dependency and into the sphere of moral conflict.

•   The whole project is meant that all participator will learn with it and will come into direction Nibbana. And here I am totally not excluded, maybe the only one who needs to learn his lesson. If it will just develop noble disciples of private awakened people and stay a endless building side, it is totally according the project purpose. The way is the in-situ object and how it looks like where it ends, we don’t know yet (I guess). Step by Step” but further. Security is just to be found in the unbinding and to capture it, it is the way. To break down anywhere along the way is much more beneficial as to degenerate in continuing cheating one self in the delusional security of the livingroom.
What I know from my own experiences very well is that one might be able to muse and ponder till the eternity which problems could come up if we make this or that, but one will actually never start to put things into a test and act. “There is nothing good, except one acts”, thought bubbles are important, but one day one needs to go out on the field.

Neverthenless „Sangha vatthu“ seems to be very marking and might be totally enough to get that what is helpful.

’The base of recovery favor’

-   gifts
-   lovely/pleasant words
-   helpful deeds
-   impartiality

That seems to be a base with can not cause downwelling. In regard of “pleasant” words i need to practice with special effort, but that is maybe a matter of false translation (or what is meant by "sappurisupassayo"?) Lovely (touching, attachment increasing) goes totally against my grain. :-)

To come back to the point again, there is furthermore a importand approach „If you difine your self, you limit yourself“ and the eightfold path has lastly its purpose to get free of objectification even through it is also used to force. So its all lesser a matter of to be or not to be, but to move away form this kind of thinking.

To come not in touch with the noble Sangha could have two reasons. One is that one might be on a place where it is impossible to meet them or the defilements are so strong that one is not able to recognize them.
Both problems, I think, are very well able to be solved with such a “project and create the base (nissaya) for both at the same time. So this “project”, if the orientation is always corrected with right effort and proper concentration, with nessesary confidence and some trust in gained discernment, safeguarded by mindfulness, will be a secure connection between the mountain and the prophet and if the one come to the other or opposite is not an issue right from the beginning.

(Additionlaly: „Public“ It is intented to keep all, aside of the monastic area in the future, as public as possible for all who participate even as visitor and its not indented to maintain a backstage aside it. Of course there will be some saver places for personal experiences but that’s it. As free as possible giving up to karma)
