A cetiya, Chedi, a place to remember a certain person largely and public where mostly the bodily remainings are stored, as the Lord Buddha once short before his death declared to Ven. Ananda, is proper erected for for kind of people:

Namo tassa bhagavato arahato sammā-sambuddhassa

"There are four persons, Ananda, who are worthy of a stupa. Who are those four? A Tathagata, an Arahant, a Fully Enlightened One is worthy of a stupa; so also is a Paccekabuddha,[49] and a disciple of a Tathagata, and a universal monarch.

As the Lord Buddha also counted, the purpose of such is to be reminded on goodness and to rejoice with it for many:

- Namo tassa bhagavato arahato sammā-sambuddhassa -

"And why, Ananda, is a Tathagata, an Arahant, a Fully Enlightened One worthy of a stupa? Because, Ananda, at the thought: 'This is the stupa of that Blessed One, Arahant, Fully Enlightened One!' the hearts of many people will be calmed and made happy; and so calmed and with their minds established in faith therein, at the breaking up of the body, after death, they will be reborn in a realm of heavenly happiness. And so also at the thought: 'This is the stupa of that Paccekabuddha!' or 'This is the stupa of a disciple of that Tathagata, Arahant, Fully Enlightened One!' or 'This is the stupa of that righteous monarch who ruled according to Dhamma!' — the hearts of many people are calmed and made happy; and so calmed and with their minds established in faith therein, at the breaking up of the body, after death, they will be reborn in a realm of heavenly happiness. And it is because of this, Ananda, that these four persons are worthy of a stupa."

The Suta also mentioned that for communities, families and nations, who do not respect such places or even steal from such places, a soon destruction by enemies has probably to come:

- Namo tassa bhagavato arahato sammā-sambuddhassa -

"What have you heard, Ananda: do the Vajjis show respect, honor, esteem, and veneration towards their shrines, both those within the city and those outside it, and do not deprive them of the due offerings as given and made to them formerly?"

"I have heard, Lord, that they do venerate their shrines, and that they do not deprive them of their offerings."

"So long, Ananda, as this is the case, the growth of the Vajjis is to be expected, not their decline.

"What have you heard, Ananda: do the Vajjis duly protect and guard the arahats, so that those who have not come to the realm yet might do so, and those who have already come might live there in peace?"

"I have heard, Lord, that they do."

"So long, Ananda, as this is the case, the growth of the Vajjis is to be expected, not their decline."

Today there is a certain boom in building Cetiyas everywhere, which are atually just clan-lingas. Many monasteries make those improper desires to a business, selling even land for such and many people think that it is in their case proper to claim to build cetiay, either often huge land everywhere or in monasteries: "we are doners, so have a right on our donation".

Thats the other extreme and soon, if this occupation will not stop, there will be more land occupied by the lingas of death then people would be able to dwell.

It's not a old tradition to do such, since there would be already the whole land full with cetiyas not even a ricefield left, but has to do with teaching making Dana and giving pride and identification as reward.

Seldom are Buddhas, Arahats, their disciples and rightous rolers and it's not of use, not of compassion to confuse people believing so that the ordinary, the common, is something to devote.

Another tradition having gone lost is the dedication and donation of (ones) corps to practitioners and monks in monasteries, pictures and possibilities for good reflection on the ugly.

Today cemeteries are only forcing greed and pride and such is of no good future for all those forcing such and getting only touch by this global lie today willing to do all to hide the 1. noble truth for a sourt lastings belly sake.

Good if those aspects are wise reflected and considered and good to ask if there are doubts in regard of the proper way to remember past and relicts.
