As for those actually having reached already a Deva-stage:

Namo tassa bhagavato arahato sammā-sambuddhassa

At Rajagaha. As he was standing to one side, Uttara the deva's son recited this verse in the Blessed One's presence:


Life is swept along,
next-to-nothing its span.
For one swept on by aging
   no shelters exist.
Perceiving this danger in death,
one should do deeds of merit
   that bring about bliss.

[The Buddha:]
Life is swept along,
next-to-nothing its span.
For one swept to old age
   no shelters exist.
Perceiving this danger in death,
one should drop the world's bait
   and look for peace.

meaning the merits of the path, merits objected toward the deathless, which lead beyond this world, birth, aging, sickness and death.

Since less people in modern and western world actually know much about sickness and the required merits for possible care, Atma thought to give it a topic to make the matter more clearly.

When one gets sick, more serious, aside of the matter that health is a matter of ones own kamma, such as treatment is not something inherent or something one has a right to, but a matter of merits and a matter of generosity of others.

While in modern, western world, some a mount is certain compensated by means of systems which are causing manifold debts to a large unknown benefactor, such possibility of treatment in a natural dependency depends:

* on the lowest and most insecure level: on ones simple amassed and available wealth, since there are no artifact compensation systems and artifact debt systems. Becoming serious ill, for most people, for most families, means to abound even all wealth amassed.

* it depends further on the size, the relation within and wealth of ones family. One lives in near dependency of ones relatives and friends.

* all of this, say the material issues, the outwardly issues, are of cause related to ones past and present merits, a matter of being related to generous people...

* at least all, what ever factors, come down on ones merits and demerits as well as the required soil that it's fruits can ripe. No amount of wealth or poorness can erase such issues.

It's therefore very good and important to think about the Noble truth of Suffering in relation of sickness, the causes for good health, wealth, good relations, and to give as much as possible into virtue and generosity since modern, western, artifact debt and compensation systems would, although seeming nice, not erase the causes but have the tendency to increase the issues of bad health and in-debt. Such systems can by nature never work long, since the amount of in-debt has it's limits.

A person, often reflecting on old-age, sickness and death, would not give much into bad deeds, would not run wild after things which will be lost. Such a person, seeing the first Noble Truth, having faith and trust in the Buddhas teachings, the second, third and forth Noble Truth, is therefore inclined toward good and meritorious deeds, scarifies and if good instructed at the proper times toward dedications which lead upwardly.

As it just came to mind, and Bhante Varado shortly arrived here, not sure how much he got known the heavenly messengers and how much he could abound normal western, modern views, being possible most time in contact with "modern-minded" people: Maybe Bhante likes, out of compassion, to give a talk on sickness, on the first Noble Truth and the steps for gaining long and health existences till the point of beyond and the path. (if wishing to make and audio record, such would be no problem to upload as well, although the size and quality is good if not to high, to save traffic and paccaya-requirements).

If we think on the community of "outsiders", the Sangha, monks, the Buddha introduced such as a "family-health-system",very equal the situation, usual duties in Dhamma-Vinaya countries also under normal people:
