Uppalavanna von Galla, Schwester
(??-??) [uppa]

Uppalavanna from Galla, Sister
(??-??) [uppa]

Ven. sister Uppalavanna (from Galla) is a Sinhalese nun, who translated serval books of the Anguttara Nikaya into English. The name "from Galla" has been given to prevent a possible confusion with the German nun Uppalavanna and on the infomation that she uses to maintain her practice mainly in the province Galla in Sri Lanka. An extensive collection of here translations can befound on www.metta.lk . [Source: personal communication with Bhikkhu Mettavihari, the editor of metta.lk]

Venerable gentleman,

Venerable ladies,

Dear supporter and maintainer of metta.lk,

first of all I like to express may gratitude for contributing the possibilities and access to so many great work on metta.lk.

Today while searching for the author of a sutta translation, I came again across Ven. Sister Uppalavannā and this time also across there inspiring life story. After seeing the face and reading two sentences I felt the urgency to forward this inheritance and started to translate it into German without reading it further.

Of course I am not much "gifted" by the talent of language I nevertheless don't like to miss the possibility to offer you this simple translation. (I have attached it, as a pdf-file). May you accept this small gift, not as a repayment, but as a further forward and maybe multiplication of your previous meritorious deeds. Simply sharing merits. I will also try to supply a revised version of the English Original, since it has some "errors", as far as I could see, and seems to be "just" scanned.

Independent of this, I would like to ask if I would be able to give some assistance in maintaining your works such as formatting, converting and maybe even adding internal links. Of course also in this aspect I am not perfect and not professional, but maybe it would be nevertheless use- and helpful.

Furthermore, also independent of the previous questions and the translation, I would like to ask, if it would be possible and acceptable for you, to use some selected translations of Ven. Sister Uppalavannā to integrate them on zugangzureinsicht.org, a German-English independent "mirror" site of accesstoinsight.org in english and with a German translation of it as well.

Please do not feel disturbed by all I have mentioned and asked for here and please do also feel not distressed if my kind of approach is not usual for you, as well, please don't feel the necessity and obligation to consist anything out of my approach.

Thank you very much for your time and interest.

Feel welcome!

Publisher's Note

The Anguttara Nikaya is one of the five sections of the Sutta Pitaka which in turns is one of the three "baskets" of the Pali Canon of Theravada Buddhism. The Pali Canon records the discourses of the Buddha and his principal disciples. It was systematised shortly after the passing away of the Buddha and was committed to writing about four centuries later.
The Anguttara Nikaya is divided into 11 sections, each called a nipta. These sections are arranged in numerical order, each section dealing with a number of related things according to the order of the Nipata. The passages included in the present collection have been made from the first four nipatas, as follows:

Ekaka Nipata        1 3
Duka Nipata4
Tika Nipata5   30
Catukka Nipata31   35

Sister Uppalawanna has made further selections from the remaining nipatas, and these may be published later in the BSQ Tracts on Buddhism series.

Namo tassa bhagavato arahato sammā-sambuddhassa

7. Dukkathàsuttaü Ý Unpleasant talk
...

translation:

Here, relating to that, the translation by the Ven. Sister Uppalavanna

Namo tassa bhagavato arahato sammā-sambuddhassa

Furthermore, a very important Sutta, that is certainly missing on ZzE. If someone would like to ask for a proper (if even unpleasent) translation: Sadhu!

Bhante Mettavihari, nachgefragt.

Greetings Moritz ..,

The pali cannon and Sister Upalavanna's Translations and the Sinhala Translations are free for you to use as is.

If you change anything in Sister Upalavanna's translation in your site then please remove the reference to her Translation. This is a request by Sister Upalavanna.

I would like to introduce you to Ven Sujato who is doing much more than I on textual matter and please do have a look at his website as well as corporate with him.

He is looking for both German and French versions of Translations.

And clarification of some important questions in the further course of conversation:

Quote from: Moritz
Dear Venerable Bhante Mettavihari,

thank you very much for your helpful response.

I am very happy that we are allowed to share the texts given on metta.lk further. Anumodana!

Regarding your remark: No, we would not change anything in the texts. And thank you very much for the hint. Of course, it is important to know about and respect the author's intentions. And it was certainly a sign of conscientious care and foresight by the venerable Sister Uppalavanna to assert such conditions.

We would, however, apart from republishing them as they are, certainly like to use the texts as a basis for further translations (to German), to be shared as a gift of Dhamma. In doing that, we would always refer to the original work and make it clear that this is a (lay) translation of the given English translation. I trust that this is a good and proper way. If you have any concerns, please don't hesitate to express them. I am very grateful for your help. And any advice is welcome.

Regarding the texts by Sister Uppalavanna I have another question: As you are certainly aware, Sister Uppalavanna was originally from Germany (formerly Else Buchholtz). This is one reason why I would be more than happy for her works to be more accessible in the German speaking sphere. I think to come upon such things could be very inspiring for many, as people can relate in some way they would not otherwise have thought of. Recently a friend had translated this memorial text by some devoted Sinhalese laypeople, which he also found on metta.lk: metta.lk/english/sister-uppalavanna.html. I had not formerly heard of Sister Uppalavanna. It was a very uplifting read.

So I think, in this regard, it can be especially of great help and inspiration to make her textual work also accessible in German. Of course, at this, the immediate question comes to mind, if she might not possibly already have translated sutta texts or written other Dhamma related texts in German as well? If you know anything about that, this would be really great.

And thank you for referring me further to Bhante Sujato. Yes, I am aware of SuttaCentral, although I did not have a very deep look into it.
I am sure it will be a helpful resource for many. I will try to get in touch with Ajahn Sujato.

And sorry for the quite long delay. My internet connection was cut off for a couple of days. And then I was involved in several other things. So it took a while to reply.

Thank you for your patience, and, once more, for your kind assistance.

All the best and kind regards

_/\_

Moritz

Greetings

Just an important small correction.

Sister Upalavanna is not the German Sister Upalavanna referred to on my website.
The Translator of the texts is a Sinhala Nun living mostly in Galle district.

Oh, okay. Thank you very much, Bhante, for that information. That is important to know to not spread misattributions.

Anumodana!

So we should correct the wrong attributions in the list of authors .

Many thanks at this point to the Ven. Mettavihari for the correction and for the well-wishing consent to share the sutta translations by sister Upalavanna (from Sri Lanka) further as Dhamma-Dana.

Anumodana!

Sadhu! Sadhu! Sadhu!

Anumdodana!

Sadhu! Sadhu! Sadhu!

Not only congratulation, sympathetic joy and respect, but also big thanks for your care and work and especially for questioning deeper, in direction of both of you: the Ven. Bhante Mettavihari and to you Moritz.

Now there are many things lighter and cause of joy.

Ich would be very glad, if you are able to invite Ven. Ajahn Sujato and get him involved. I had not much skill in doing so and for sure, I used to do some sharp critics on some of his deeds. But I am like always and in regard of everybody good minded and confident.

I trust that it is ok, that I cut of this posts and put it together with the corresponding topic.

:-*

Sadhu!

Thank you for taking on that work, and arousing attention. I would not have thought of this.

Perhaps it is good if I write to the Ven. Bhikkhu Mettavihari once more about this, and ask whether it is alright for him in this way, or if he might perhaps want to choose a different formulation.

I think, for this, it would not be wrong to already integrate the Dukkhata Sutta as an example, so that the result would be visible.
I will start doing this now, if you are not already at it.

Venerable Bhante Mettavihari,

my friend Johann has already done some preparatory work for integrating the Ven. Sister Upalavanna's sutta translations on the website zugangzureinsicht.org.

In order to conform with the wishes and intentions of Sister Upalavanna, as you mentioned, he has already sketched a "publisher's note" that should be displayed at the bottom of each of the offered sutta translations' pages, as follows:

You can see how it looks on the web page along with the rest of the copyright/dana information here, at the example of the Dukkhata Sutta (AN 5.157): http://zugangzureinsicht.org/html/tipitaka/an/an05/an05.157.upal_en.html, when you click on "more" at the bottom of the page.

It would be good if you could tell us whether you agree with this suggested display and the wording of this publisher's note, or if you would like to change it and use your own words.

Thank you very much for your help.

Kind regards

Note: I had already integrated the sutta with the suffix "upal", without seeing that it was already done with "uppa". I think "uppa" is better, as I think "Uppalavanna" is the correct spelling.

A great challenge with a lot of freedom and much responsibility, a gift which is headed for groth. I guess slowliy, with concern, with increasing knowledge and necessary flair, it is more then worthy to take on the duty and make the best use of it so that it does not lead just to a museum of storage place. As always are the hazard the measures, which are needed to be overcome.

Thanks for making aware.

I am not interested in great challenges and much responsibility and duties. I think I have already taken up far too much. That was once more said prematurely: I'll do that. Sorry. In best case I could do it like a cowherd , and would not know any better.

So, it is alright. Thanks once more to Bhante Mettavihari.

Of course I think it is good to include the information about the request by Sister Uppalavanna.

Yes, collecting for a museum. Nothing else what I'm doing here, losing all sense of direction for the rest of my worldly life.

May all have some peace of mind and remember there's life outside the internet.
